the American Legion

The American Legion office in Natick. I remember seeing that trophy before and the window setting has been like that forever. To me, the lone trophy remotely symbolizes the past glory of veterans, left in a corner unattended after what they've fought for had long become history - although in fact it's just a trophy for the legion's baseball team.

Drive-by Shooting

I am going to spend more time on foot than on wheels while shooting these American postcard pictures. Instead of burning rubber from one town to another, I will pick a town, park my car on the main street and start walking. Pros: I can concentrate while driving. Cons: local cops may take me as a potential terrorist who wants to bomb the hell out of their Staples.

Broken glass

Spoon folks, I am pretty sure that you must have a lot of broken spoons for I have many broken glasses. Most of them are just badly designed and deserve to be broken anyway. However, the "breaking" of this one makes me feel quite upset. I should not have lowered my camera so quickly after the shot. :(

What are your broken spoons that you pity?

P.S. This was taken in Chinatown, NYC. gr1v + RVP 50 (oops, no wonder....)

I tried to make some sense out of this picture(like the guy in American Beauty shooting the flying plastic bag:P), but finally I decide just to call it uncommon things.

三年前，他们各自背着照相机
踏上街头，享受并纪录穿越城市的乐趣
三年里，他们生活在不同的地方
却经常通过网络屏幕，互相分享对方生活的点滴
三年后，他们走到一起
思想和处境各自不同，但对记忆流失的恐惧却与日俱增

于是，他们小心翼翼地保存起那些青春的碎片
并挑选出其中60帧凝固的影像
以告慰流过脑海的那些有印象的
或者已经没有印象的瞬间

对于我们漫长的一生来说，“三年”也许只是一个数字的概念而已；对于一个被淹没在日常生活里的人来说，照相机的镜头，记录的只是某个固定的瞬间，COPY不走样而已——这只是对大多数人而言。
然而，对有些人来，可能不仅仅是如此。王平在美国，他黑色的瞳孔始终审视着眼前艳丽的纽约；张乐陆和郑知渊镜头里的上海，无论白天还是夜晚，始终是座黑白的城市，前者的叙述里经常出现一种梦幻般的舒缓，而后者的镜头里则呈现出某种不明所以的冲击力让人震撼——对他们来说，拍摄，很少是简单地记录生活，更是记录思想，是一种生活方式和人生态度的选择。
是的，与其说，摄影是记录影像，更不如说，摄影是一种记忆。这三年中，时间流去，空间转换，那停留下来被定格的一瞬间，何止仅仅是纽约街头一个路人的眼神，或者是外滩河岸一个女人被风拂起的裙角？
那么，以一张照片为入口，走回时光的河流中去。在一个瞬间被定格下时，当时究竟发生了什么事情呢？那个人的深情的眼神里可以看到什么？闭上眼睛深呼吸，又闻到那个熟悉的确已记不清的有着温暖阳光的午后，那就是被掩埋在脑海中的对过去的某个瞬间的记忆。以一张照片为钥匙，有些记忆会忽然开启，登上时光之河的游船，荡漾着，或悲或喜。所谓摄影的意义，对他们可能大抵如此吧。
我们生活的世界是有限而束缚的，而心灵的疆界却是无边的。照相机的镜头，则就是他们观察另外一个无限世界里的眼睛，带领他们走向那无限远和无限深的境地。正如日本著名摄影家森山大道所说的那样：“对于拍摄我没有一个固定的领域，只有路上，它才是我的学校、我的摄影室、我的全部人生。”
三年，是漫长的摄影记忆生涯里一个心灵的总结，只是一次小小的回眸。未来的路途正长，那么继续走吧，只有上路，才是他们全部的人生。

王平
1978年出生于云南昆明，2001年于复旦大学毕业后，旅居美国纽约至今。在他身上，融汇了西方式的坦诚与直爽表达，以及东方人对生活的诗意追求。因而他的摄影提供了一种对纽约的东方式观看，而理科的背景，强化了他对几何和谐性以及精致画面的控制力，视角独特。

张乐陆
1980年生于上海，毕业于上海大学美术学院艺术设计系。平时的正职是设计师，拍照的初衷是因为喜欢把玩相机，喜欢机械相机的精密和手感，更喜欢看透过它的“眼睛”所看到的世界。生活是平静的，然而那个世界里，经常会出现只有梦境中才遇见的场景，也许这就是他不断拍摄的原因。

郑知渊
七十年代末出生在上海静安区，毕业于上海工程技术大学摄影专业，先后在上海多家杂志社任摄影师一职。
一直认为，选择摄影就是选择了一种生活方式，因此在这三年工作之余，长时间穿梭在街头巷尾，用自己的眼睛去捕捉那些令他自己怦然心动的现实碎片，并且通过这种拍摄的方式，重新审视自己以及二十多年来生活的这个城市。拍摄方式相当随性、自由，这也是一直以来他本人对生命和生活的理念。

Lost in Translation

Since I started shooting color film, color calibration has always been a fun thing to play with: sh0uld I scan the negative as Fuji NPS or Kodak Portra? Should I keep that nice eerie blue tint or play with the curves to get rid of it? What is more important - saturated color or detail in the shadow? Things get even more complicated while I switch from positive to negative, one brand to an other.

One part of me loves the bold and lustrous colors such as in David Alan Harvey's Cuba, the other me worships Stephen Shores' mundane color of American motels and breakfast. Quite often my head spins by merely trying to determine h0w I want a color image to appear. The confusing film type settings of my scanner only adds more fun to the whole process.

Since HBC's "decisive moment" is old school now, indecisiveness might even become the next big thing. So I guess I will just keep jumping back and forth b/w Mr. Harvey and Mr. Shore. :-)

Democratic Street Photography

While it's true that galleries, museums and private collectors turn their back to SP, it's also undeniable that street photography, as digital imaging technology evolves, is becoming a more and more democratic form of photography. Seriously, who needs a strobe, a reflector or a model to do SP? All you need is one camera, one lens, or heck, forget about it, one cell phone to take street photos.

"There are a lot of young people [who] really want to do street photography," she says. Could the pendulum swing back to embrace the street ethos? "I'd like to think so," says Einzig. "I think people are hungry to feel that connection."

The article itself isn't very impressive, I was especially dissapointed by the interpretation of the Lake Louise shot, which puzzled me when I first saw in MoMA:

"...the mountains' watery double is as much a legitimate part of the visible world as the mountains themselves. The pile of boulders in the foreground is like a barrier protecting, and ensuring, the picture's sincerity."

After a second look, the picture now almost appears like a shot of boulders in front of a studio backdrop. Maybe that's just another joke pulled off by LF. Yes, that must be it...

And here's something more interesting:

"(HCB's) pictures risk prettifying what they document. And "documentary" snapshots are vulnerable to the pitfall of the easy social or psychological irony."

So what if one takes photos that fit into both categories, would it be qualified as "prettified irony"? Why does documentary always have to ironic? Old school.

我看了一下，没有看到有blogger.com的博客有分类的，不知道我们能不能用其他方法替代。
我想大家要使想认真的玩这个blog，不如去买个网络空间，自己装个wordpress, 功能强大，
又有完全的控制。每个月大家分摊下来也就一两刀。还可以注册个bentspoonphotos.com的
域名. (查了一下,还有)

不过大家觉得没关系, 就这样用着, 我也没问题. 能跟大伙儿一块儿凑热闹就很高兴了. :)
